MacDuffee will run at state
Madras senior Hannah MacDuffee has run her way into the OSAA Class 4A State Cross Country Championships.
MacDuffee ran her best race of the year to finish fourth in Wednesday's Tri-Valley Conference Championships, which were held at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada.
In the boys race, defending district champion Isaiah Wapsheli, a senior, had a heartbreaking race, finishing in eighth place in the boys race, one place short of qualifying for the state meet. Wapsheli ran a personal record time of 17:46.6. However, runners from The Dalles and Crook County, who were in 5A the previous year, swept the first seven places in the race.
The White Buffalo girls finished fourth in the team race with 78 points. Crook County and Molalla each scored 46 points, however, Crook County earned the tiebreaker so won the girls title, while The Dalles finished in third place with 49 points. Gladstone and Estacada also had runners in the race, but did not field complete teams, so did not factor in the team scoring.
MacDuffee finished in a time of 20:21.9, exactly the same time as third-place finisher Alaina Casady of The Dalles. Freshmen Anika and Annalyse Jenson, both of Molalla, took first and second in the girls race with times of 19:12.8 and 20:13.1, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring for Madras were sophomore Emily Picard in 14th place with a time of 22:23.7, along with juniors Talise Wapsheli, 18th in 23:10.7, Kahmussa Green, 26th in 25:05.8 and Maria Erostarbe Ferrer, 33rd with a time of 31:42.1.
The Dalles took first in the boys team race with 22 points. They were followed by Crook County, 34, Molalla, 100, Gladstone, 106, and Estacada, 118. Madras had just four runners finish the boys race, so did not factor in the team scoring.
Following Wapsheli for the White Buffalos were freshman Deklyn Parton, 23rd in 19:39.6, junior Sean Deller, 29th in 20:54.0 and sophomore Jayden Esquiro, 34th with a time of 21:50.5.
The Dalles senior Juan Diego Contreras ran away from the field taking first with a time of 15:42.8.
MacDuffee will compete in the state championships on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Lane Community College in Eugene. Racing starts at 10 a.m. with the 1A/2A/3A girls race. The Class 4A girls race is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. with racing continuing throughout the day and concluding with the 6A boys race, which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
