Clark Jones is coach of the year; Gonzalez and Santellano both make first team to lead the Madras contingent

TONY AHERN - MHS soccer coaches Scott Jividen, left, and Clark Jones celebrate after Madras clinched the Tri-Valley League title Oct. 28 in a win over The Dalles. Jones was recently named the Tri-Valley Conference coach of the year. The Madras White Buffalos boys soccer team had an outstanding season, winning the Tri-Valley Conference title.

While the squad suffered a disappointing ending to the season — a 3-1 loss at home to Newport in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs — the jump from not making post-season last year to an 8-2 league mark and the championship is an excellent achievement.

The strong season for the Buffs was in full display with the announcement of the Tri-Valley Conference all-league team.

Clark Jones, who had coached the White Buffs for 14 seasons, was named coach of the year.

Ben Haefs, a midfiedler from Estacada, was named the league player of the year.

Gustavo Santellano, a senior midfielder, and Steve Gonzalez, a sophomore forward, both landed on the first team. Gonzalez scored 15 goals on the season for Madras and Santellano was a key piece of a strong defensive crew for the Buffs.

Four Buffalos made the second team: forward Eben Tapia, a sophomore; David Diaz, a junior midfielder; Yael Carton, a senior defender; and junior goalkeeper Javier Castro.

Additionally, three White Buffalos earned honorable mention: senior Gilbert Palacios, sophomore Andres Pineda and junior Giovanni Diaz.

Madras finished 10-3 on the season, and with all the experience returning, should head into next season expected to be at or near the top of the Tri-Valley League again.
