Busy club urges public to enter flowers at the Jefferson County Fair next week

 - The Madras Garden Club hosts the Jefferson County Fair Flower Show.

By Kathy Evans, Madras Garden Club

The Madras Garden Club has survived a year of personal distancing, wearing masks and not being able to meet in social gatherings. They still go on, tending the Memorial Rose Garden at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, and they organized and had a very successful Annual Plant Sale this year at the first Saturday Market held at Sahalee Park. They had a great selection of house plants, vegetable plants, outdoor annuals and perennials. The community had an awesome turnout and was able to buy inexpensive, healthy plants for their spring planting.

They also sponsored a children's table at the June 5 Saturday Market at Sahalee Park. Children were able to plant seeds in pots to take home. Supervision and materials were provided by the Garden Club.

This organization is made up of 35 local home gardeners with various degrees of experience. The club was organized April 14, 1958, as a nonprofit organization. Their operating motto, "A Garden for Every Home" guides them, and they continue to fulfill that goal even in times like we experienced this last year.

They re-opened the Memorial Rose Garden in April this year, preparing the plants for the long hot summer coming up. The garden is located at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and is always open for quiet meditation and contemplation when sitting and admiring the roses. Each rose was placed in the garden in memory or honor of a loved one, and each rose has a bronze marker memorializing the loved ones. If you are interested in memorializing a loved one, please contact a member of the garden club.

The group is now getting ready for the Jefferson County Fair, which will be July 21 through July 24. They sponsor the Jefferson County Fair Flower Show. The theme this year is Cowboy Boots and Country Roots. Flower entries will be accepted and registered on Tuesday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Entries will be judged at 7 p.m. on the 20th.

Rules and classification for the flowers can be found online at because there will be no printed Fair Guide this year. They would like to encourage more flower arrangement entries. Be sure to check out this website. They have some new categories to inspire creative ideas as well as the fair theme.

So, get your creative flower arranging genes working and submit a beautiful arrangement as well as your home-grown flowers that still exist after this horrific heat wave that we just experienced. When you are at the fair this year, be sure to stop by the flower show and check out all the entries and see what is growing in Madras this year.

Upcoming day tours are being planned to visit the Cascade Lavender Farm here in Madras, The Oregon Garden in Silverton and fruit loop growers in Parkdale this fall. During these day trips, the group gets together to share transportation, shop (for flowers and plants, of course), have lunch, and socialize.

Meetings are held every second Wednesday of each month where usually 10 to 15 members attend a business meeting and then enjoy snacks and beverages and socializing. The meetings are held at various locations in Madras, including individual members' homes.

The Garden Club is always accepting new members. The next meeting will be Aug. 11. For further information and location details, please contact Marilyn Clark at 541-419-4625.

If you enjoy gardening, socializing, and learning gardening tips and tricks, you will enjoy becoming a member of the Madras Garden Club. If you are not a member, we look forward to seeing you at the Jefferson County Fair Flower show, where we will be admiring your 2021 flower entries.
