Both programs await word on their return after positive tests earlier this week

PMG PHOTO: MADRAS PIONEER - Both the football and volleyball programs at Madras High School are under quarantine after positive COVID-19 tests. The Madras High School football and volleyball teams are currently in quarantine due to at least one positive COVID-19 test within each program, MHS athletic director Daniel Barendse confirmed earlier this week. The county health department investigations are ongoing, and testing was conducted at the school on Friday.

In the meantime, the football team's scheduled trip to Klamath Falls to play Klamath Union High School was canceled. Because it was a non-league match, it will not count against the Buffs' overall record. However, if the team is forced to miss its Tri-Valley opener against Molalla next week, that would go down as a forfeit under OSAA rules unless the game is made up.

While it is technically possible that the Molalla game could be rescheduled for another week, it would likely require one of Madras' previously-scheduled games to be canceled. For health and safety reasons, said Barendse, the football team cannot compete in two contests back-to-back without proper recovery time.

As for the volleyball team, the Buffs' matches this past week against Estacada and North Marion were both nixed. Because it lacks the violent collisions that football has, there is more flexibility to potentially reschedule those games. As of Saturday evening, neither of those games have been marked as forfeits, and Madras' next scheduled match, a home tilt on Tuesday against Corbett, had not been marked as canceled on the OSAA website.

The Madras football team stands pat at 1-1 as it awaits its return to the field. The Buffs' volleyball team is 0-5 and looking to pick up its first win when it hits the court again, whenever that may be.

While the teams may need to miss a few more games as they isolate and quarantine, it is important to remember that the health of the students, faculty and the community at large is more significant than any sporting event.
