City government — Process is nearing an end as three finalists are chosen from a field of 58 candidates for the position of city manager

The search for a new Newberg city manager is coming to a close, with the official meet and greet with the finalists on Tuesday. Nancy Boyer of Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments, said this introduction to the public is one of the last steps in the process before final interviews with the panel that selects the finalist.

“Wednesday will be the interview process itself and there’s three interview panels that the candidates will be talking to,” Boyer said. “One is a community panel, the other is a city staff panel, primarily made of department heads, and then the City Council.”

Once all interviews are complete, the City Council will take feedback from the panels and use it in an executive session.

“Hopefully (they will) determine who their top candidate or candidates are,” she said.

Although the candidates work or live in different areas of the Pacific Northwest, Boyer said each has spent time working in Oregon. Initially, there were four finalists slated for interviews, but Joe Hannen from Mukilteo, Wash. withdrew his candidacy after accepting another position.

Jaque Betz

City manager for the city of Florence since January 2012, Betz has a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University and is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at Northwestern University. She has worked in various capacities in Florence since September 1999.

William Monahan

City manager in Milwaukie since October 2010, Monahan also applied for a similar position in Burien, Wash., but was not ultimately chosen. He has a law degree from Lewis and Clark College and a master’s degree in community planning from the University of Rhode Island.

Nancy Newton

A George Fox University graduate, Newton is the deputy county administrator for Clackamas County and has been since 2010. With a bachelor’s degree in business and organizational leadership, she is completing her master’s degree in public administration at Portland State University.
