Yamhill County Sheriff's deputies find elderly woman deceased in car following accident

A Washington County woman was killed Wednesday in a single vehicle accident in rural Newberg.

According to a brief report from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to a crash in the 19000 block of Bald Peak Road at about 1:20 p.m. Once they arrived, deputies found a 2003 Mercury Sable in the ditch after it apparently left the road and crashed into a tree.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, the report said, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The report identified her as 80-year-old Betty Jones of McCormick Hill Road in rural Hillsboro.

An investigation indicates Jones was traveling westbound on Bald Peak Road when she lost control of the car and "went into the ditch and struck a tree with substantial force." No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

An investigation is continuing by the sheriff's office.
