Police report indicates Robert R. Poter was killed when he attempted to rob a convenience store

PORTLAND — A 53-year-old Newberg man died in early January during what officials from the Portland Police Bureau said was an attempted armed robbery at a U-Haul store on Southeast Powell Boulevard.

Police said the man, identified the following day as Robert R. Porter, entered the store at about 6:59 p.m. Jan. 3 with a firearm and demanded money. He was, police said, shot by U-Haul employee Tyson B. Pfau, 27, during the attempted robbery at the 4831 S.W. Powell Blvd. location.

When officers arrived, they found a wounded man on the property. He was taken to a local hospital, but died in the ambulance on the way.

An investigation by homicide detectives continues.
