Brian Ogle purchases the business after transitioning from computer sciences to dentist

On June 15, Brian Ogle purchased Chehalem Dental, taking over the clinic from Mark Barnard, who is retiring.

"He called me and I said, 'Hey, I'd love to buy it!" Ogle said. "Normally how it works is that you buy the practice and you just step into the role that the dentist had before you. I inherited the charts of all the patients. I kept all the staff. Why wouldn't I? I think they are great. I'm in the same building. And I tell my patients, hey, I had a root canal done in this very room. I know what it feels like to have a root canal."Ogle

The dental practice continues to provide the same procedures as before, including restorative dentistry such as fillings, crowns and bridges to return the tooth to its original function. It also provides removable dentistry, pediatric care and oral surgery.

"Endodontics is root canals, nobody wants that," Ogle said "I feel like that's the biggest thing when you go to a dentist office that people would rather have two teeth pulled than a root canal. Restorative, is when we fix it up (and) restore it back to its original function. I'm not placing implants, I am restoring implants. To get technical, the implant is the screw that goes into your bone and the crown that attaches onto that is the restoration. So, I send the patients to the oral surgeon to have the implant placed at this point and then they come back to me and I put the crown on."

Ogle first came to Newberg to study computer science at George Fox University. He worked in computer science for 10 years, but was never quite satisfied with life in a cubicle, being isolated and sitting in front of a computer all day.

"I loved computers and data bases and all the nerdy things …," he said. "I worked with different companies for seven years then later burned out and I looked around and decided that I wanted to do something else."

He considered medicine, but his doctor steered him away from that before he visited Barnard, who told him that he would like dentistry and should think about it.

"You have to shadow before you sign up," Ogle said. "I shadowed with Mark and decided that I would like it and gave it a shot."

He left the world of computer science, was accepted at Oregon Health Sciences University and spent the next seven years in dental school, graduating in 2015. He worked at different clinics on the southern Oregon coast when, after 23 years, Barnard announced he was ready to retire.

"I love being a dentist," Ogle said. "There are things that I really, really enjoy, like helping people. I like that somebody can come to me in pain, 'Oh my tooth hurts so bad and I was up all night last night, can you help me?' I tell them absolutely, I can get you out of pain in 15 minutes. Then they're okay again. That is one of my favorite things. I like doing that, I like helping people and it is so much better than sitting behind a desk behind a computer screen all day long."
