Although thousands of miles separate Newberg and New York City, in May a piece of the Big Apple will come to town.
Aiming for an early May opening, Honey Pie Pizza will be the latest addition to the city's list of eateries. Owner Jeff Skinner said he's waiting on a final inspection from the city and anticipates a May 3 opening of the shop off of South College Street.
The pizza joint will sell whole pies and pizza by the slice, with a menu inspired by New York style pizza – namely thin crust pizza that is easy to fold and eat on the go.
Originally from Ashland, Skinner lived in New York City after college, before returning to Oregon in 2015 and ultimately settling in Newberg. He said he always wanted to open a restaurant and thought Newberg needed a casual pizza place that people can afford to go to and get good food, beer and wine.
"That's what I wanted to provide," he said.
Once it opens, Honey Pie will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. Once a set staff is in place, Skinner anticipates longer hours.
"We'll be open for folks to get a late night slice," he said.
Skinner added that Honey Pie will have five signature pizzas available, with ingredients like anchovies or house made sausage, plus more standard fare, like plain cheese and pepperoni. He also said there will be seasonal offerings, a pie of the week and salads once things are set.
"The menu is just about done; I'll be posting that soon," he said.
Sharing a court yard with Valley Wine Merchant, Skinner had to create an address for Honey Pie – so its address is 112 ½ College St. The restaurant has an "urban American, industrial" feel to it, Skinner said, with "vintage decoration." There's even a taxidermy buffalo on display.
"Hopefully this will bring something cool, hip and new to Newberg," he said.
The pizza place will have about 30 outdoor seats in the courtyard and a smallish interior with mostly bar seating and a few tables inside.
"What's important for me is that this is a welcoming space, with no pretentions and is very affordable," he said.
Skinner added he wanted the restaurant to be a place for everyone, especially for students from George Fox University to come to and grab a slice.
"I want it to be a very welcoming environment," he said. "The food will be very good."
