Fire breaks out at St. Paul dairy
Firefighters from a variety of agencies descended on a farm near St. Paul Sunday morning after owners of an organic dairy operation reported a fire in a hay barn.
According to a release from the St. Paul Fire District, the fire at Sar-Ben Farms on 22961 River Road N.E. began in hay that had become too hot and spontaneously combusted in a large metal-roofed barn.
"Upon arrival firefighters could see that the fire was coming from the center of the hay bales and flames were showing," the release said. "Fire attack began immediately with the assistance of the Aurora Fire District, Tualatin Fire & Rescue District personnel from Newberg, and firefighters from Woodburn and Dundee."
As barn fires typically burn for a while, the hay was removed and spread out on the farmer's field until extinguished.
There were no injuries in the blaze, but the farm lost an estimated $200,000 to $300,000 of hay.
