Donors in July will be entered into a drawing for genuine props from the upcoming 'Wonder Woman 1984' movie

The American Red Cross is urgently seeking donors of blood and platelets as "COVID-19 continues to cause unprecedented blood collection challenges across the country," a release from the agency said.PMG FILE PHOTO - The American Red Cross will hold blood donation events at a number of locations throughout the Newberg area in the coming weeks.

To add an incentive to give blood, those who donate in July will be automatically entered for a chance to win an authentic "Wonder Woman 1984" movie prop replica package identical to those used in the film (details are at The movie is due to be released Oct. 2 and the winner of the props will get a Golden Lasso and a pair of gauntlets identical to those used in the film.

"In times of crisis, new superheroes often emerge and new alliances are forged," Paul Sullivan, vice president of American Red Cross Biomedical Services, said in the release. "The Red Cross is thrilled to partner with 'Wonder Woman 1984' to encourage and thank fans and blood donors alike for being superheroes for patients in need by giving blood in July. Blood donors have a unique superpower — lifesaving blood. Blood cannot be manufactured and donors are the only source for patients in need."

The need for blood is exacerbated by uncertainty during states' stay-at-home orders, which has caused businesses and community organizations to cancel blood drives outright or reduce the number of individuals who can respond to donate.

Blood donation events in Clackamas County include from noon to 5 p.m. July 16 at Canby Church of the Nazarene, 2323 S.E. Territorial Road. Woodburn will host a blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. July 16 at United Methodist Church, 700 N. Cascade Drive, and from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 11 at the Donald Community Center, 10790 Main St. N.E.

Zion Lutheran Church, 301 S. River St. in Newberg, will hold a blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. July 14, while Northwest Christian Church will join in the effort from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 17 at its Newberg campus at 2315 Villa Road.
