After a long layoff due to the pandemic, residents can return to working out at the Newberg facility.

With the go-ahead from the state's health experts, the Chehalem Park & Recreation District announced Jan. 29 that it would be partially reopening its aquatic and fitness center in Newberg.

"Since Oregon Health Authority changed its guidelines effective Jan. 29, CPRD is excited to open the doors of Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center again," CPRD communications coordinator Kat Ricker said in a message to the community. "We are not ready to immediately open the entire facility; however, there are many things that we are busy making happen behind the scenes to get everything ready."

The fitness center portion of the facility opened first on Feb. 2, with workouts allowed on a reservation-only system. Reservations began Feb. 1 and can be made by phone by calling 503-537-2909.PMG FILE PHOTO - The park district's other fitness offerings, including classes, will remain on hold for the near future.

Going forward, reservations will be made available on Fridays for the upcoming week.

"You may call us … between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. beginning … Feb. 1, in order to make your 45-minute reservation to use the fitness center between the hours of 5:15 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. for the remainder of (the first) week," Ricker wrote. "Beginning Feb. 5, you may call us to make reservations for Feb. 8 through Feb. 12. We will then continue to take reservations on a weekly basis."

Reservations cover drop-in guests, who pay $5 per visit, or those with the $100 punch card that covers 23 visits.

Memberships are not available to be purchased at this time, and all those who've had their memberships suspended will remain suspended. Ricker said insurance plans are available as usual, including the Silver&Fit, SilverSneakers, Grey & Golden and Healthy Contributions plans.

As far as the aquatic center goes, reopening dates remain uncertain as of early February.

"We anticipate a phased opening of the aquatic center's Jim McMaster Competition Pool (only) for lap swim only, beginning as early as Feb. 8," Ricker said. "However, this is a tentative date, as we work to bring staff back to operating levels. Stay tuned for details. We will release more information as soon as we are able to."

Hours of operation for the aquatic and fitness center are from 5:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on the reopening and the process for making a reservation to use the facilities, visit
