A new, family-owned Mexican restaurant introduced itself to Newberg Thursday, April 1, opening its doors for the first time to welcome indoor dining and takeout customers.
La Sierra Mexican Restaurant & Cantina — owned by Rigoberto Lopez, who grew up in Newberg — offers traditional Mexican American favorites along with a selection of unique alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
"It's a family-owned restaurant," Lopez said on March 11, when the restaurant was in its early stages of development. "My father, Felix Lopez, opened up our Forest Grove location in the early 2000s. That was our first La Sierra restaurant, and when I was ready and old enough, I opened up my first restaurant in Sheridan … three years ago. Now we're expanding to Newberg and I'm excited to open up a restaurant in my hometown."
Lopez, 30, went to Edwards Elementary, Mountain View Middle School and Newberg High School. He learned the tricks of the restaurant trade from his father's successes in Forest Grove. Lopez started the Sheridan location and ran that for a number of years before adding Newberg to his ownership portfolio.
"Come and join us for our opening day," Lopez wrote in a Facebook message to the community March 31. "Let us serve you and your family, enjoy our food, drinks and service. Once again thank you for your patience and support. Our staff, my family and I are proud to be in this community."
La Sierra's hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with only indoor dining and takeout service available for now. Lopez said the restaurant's patio seating is almost completed and will soon be available for patrons to enjoy a meal outside. Delivery service is also in the works.
Those interested in calling to place a takeout order can do so at 503-487-6458. La Sierra is located at 705 N. Springbrook Road in the former Lil' Cooperstown building.
