Architectural design results in modern, industrial feel at new building off Industrial Parkway

A local wine brand has unveiled a new space for customers to enjoy the latest vintage amidst a blend of industrial and modern confines the owner hopes will convey the winery's aesthetic.

Longplay Wines, owned by winemaker Todd Hansen, opened its new tasting room last summer in a building that also houses the company's new winery.

According to director of sales and hospitality Samantha Weymouth, the biggest perk of the sprawling new space is for Hansen to have his own space to make wine. That hasn't always been the case and it creates a more direct connection with the consumer as well.

Atmosphere is key, too, with vinyl records playing in the building throughout the day.

"We always play vinyl in our tasting room and that came over from Todd's old tasting spot, so we always have vinyl going," Weymouth said. "He has incorporated cedar planking that used to be stakes at our vineyard into the building, so there's a big wall of cedar planking that adds a natural touch to the industrial building.

"Todd has been making wine from his vineyard in the Chehalem mountains since 2007. He purchased his property in 2005 and had a little tasting room in downtown Newberg near Naps. He bought this property for the tasting room in 2017, broke ground in May of 2020 and it was finished in July of this year."

Longplay is open at 11 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with the final tasting of the day typically scheduled for 4 p.m. Appointments are encouraged but not required, and a Nov. 20 and 21 wine and food pairing event is on tap as well.

"Todd's mantra is analog wine for a digital world," Weymouth said. "He feels that a lot of wineries use messaging to make it taste very similar every year, and he really likes to let the wine do what it's going to do and take on each vintage. It's analog in a way that he's not doing anything fancy to it, not using any new technology or techniques to make the wine."
