'Messiah' slated for performance at GFU, Founders Day on tap at Champoeg, church has Easter activities on tap

University musicians will perform Handel's 'Messiah' Thursday

George Fox University's orchestra, choirs and vocal studio will perform selections from Handel's "Messiah" in celebration of Holy Week at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Bauman Auditorium on the Newberg campus.

The concert will be led by Dwayne Corbin, conductor of the school's orchestra. Choir director Danielle Warner will shepherd the 130-voice choir, that also features alumni and guests. Nine vocal soloists, featuring both music major and non-music majors, have been under the instruction of Maggie Daane and Jill Sotero for the past semester in preparation for the concert.

The event will also feature the George Fox 2022 Concerto Competition winner, Alison Evans, a senior flute performance and music education major.

Founders Day on tap at Champoeg State Heritage Area

In hosting Founders Day on April 30, the Champoeg State Heritage Area will be celebrating the 179th anniversary of the vote by 52 settlers in 1843 to form the first provisional government west of the Mississippi River.

Founders Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the memorial pavilion at the park, where it has been celebrated since 1901.

Attendees and descendants of the original voters alike will listen to a roll call of honor, followed by a rifle salute, as well as hear guest speakers. A color guard from a local Veterans of Foreign War post will also attend.

Church slates myriad Easter-related activities

Joyful Servant Lutheran Church, 1716 Villa Road, will hold an Easter morning celebration service at 10 a.m. Sunday, with an indoor Easter egg hunt proceeding the event at 9:30 a.m.

In addition, the church is holding its first-ever Easter Parking Lot Party at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

"We'll have goody baskets, prizes, a 'Trunk Hop' (think treat-or-treating with an Easter twist) and Kona Ice will be here serving up sweet treats for the kiddos!" said Minister Jackie Calonder.
