Longtime Newberg educator weighs in on the school board's actions and the recall efforts

I have been a resident of this community for most of my life. I have been blessed to have taught within the Newberg School District for the majority of my career.

I am saddened by the chaos and frustration that is plaguing Newberg during the past several months. Our community has always been able to collaborate and cooperate whenever turmoil has occurred. That is not happening today.

Our schools are hurting. Our leadership is gone. Our superintendent and assistant superintendent are no longer available. Our superintendent was fired for 'no cause.' That means he didn't do anything wrong.

You and I are now left with a huge bill to pay. We have to come up with money to pay his salary for the rest of the year, plus the salary of his replacement. Where is the money to do this? This just doesn't make sense to me.

By the way, our superintendent was well respected throughout our community and around the state.

Where do we go from here? This is not a political issue. The only purpose of this recall is to put the most qualified people on the school board.

I am not judging anyone on their character. What would give me the right to do that? Instead, I am focusing on the quality of leadership concerning our school board.

Our school board meetings should follow the rules of order. Our school board chairman should know these procedures and not be reminded again and again. Our school board chairman should be knowledgeable about pertinent information. Packets given to the board members should be thoroughly reviewed before the meetings.

Out school board should be the voice of their constituents. Our school board school make decisions that enable our district to be fiscally sound. Our school board should be collaborating with the public using communication skills to come up with answers to satisfy both sides of the conflict. Our school board should be listening to local and national experts when making decisions.

I am sorry to say that this is not happening. Now is the time to do what's best for our kids.

I challenge each of you to watch a video of a school board meeting on YouTube. I guarantee that you will witness everything I have stated. (This is easily done by going to YouTube and typing in 'Newberg school board meetings.')

Please join me in voting yes in the recall of Dave Brown and Brian Shannon. Let's get back on track and do what is right for kids.
