NHS grads of 1968 and older gather at reunion

Newberg High School alumni that graduated at least 50 years ago or more are meeting from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 at the A-dec company cafeteria, 2601 Crestview Dr. Reunion chairman Ken Carsley, Class of '61, said that this will be a great time to share emories and experiences with friends and classmates.

There will be tables available to display personal memorabilia. The event is open to all graduates from the class of 1968 and older. Last year's event included graduates from the classes of 1940 to 1967.

CPRD seeks volunteers to staff Safety Town

The Chehalem Park and Recreation Department is seeking middle school students to volunteer as counselors at its annual Safety Town camp from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 6-10. Applications are available online at or at the Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center and due by Friday.

Coalition has grant applications available

Every year several grants of up to $2,500 are awarded to a wide variety of arts, cultural and heritage programs in Yamhill County.

The competitive matching grants can fund up to 50 percent of the projects total cost.

Matching dollars can include "in-kind" donations such as volunteer hours, donated space and equipment. The application deadline is Sept. 30.

Old Fashioned Friday Night added to Newberg festival

The Newberg Old Fashioned Festival will add a new feature to this year's annual rite of summer: Old Fashioned Friday Night. Slated for 5 to 8 p.m. July 27 at businesses throughout the downtown area, the event features food, wine, beer and more from downtown merchants, as well as a hot rod meet. Passports for the event are available at Jac's Deli beginning July 20 or can be picked up the day of the event. Patrons can then turn in their passports and be entered to win a basket filled with goodies from merchants.

Yamhill County Fair set for Aug. 1-4 in McMinnville

McMINNVILLE -- The Yamhill County Fair's theme this year is "Blue ribbon Dreams" and is set for August 1-4. Attendance is free for children before 3 p.m. every day of the fair. Season passes are $20 for adults and $7.50 for children. Carnival ticket prices are $20 online in advance and $30 at the fair. From Aug. 1-3, the major entertainment selections include rodeos at 6:30 p.m., openings at 7:30 p.m. and concerts at 9 p.m. Tickets, information and a full fair schedule can be found online at

Summer Jam slated for July 18 at Newberg church

Newberg Christian Church is hosting Summer Jam 2018, a series of free day camps for entering kindergarten through fifth grade, at various elementary schools this summer. Events will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, have a theme and include water balloons, inflatables, messy games and crafts and more. Parents who are able are also encouraged to bring school supplies to support students in need. The next session will be held July 18 at Crater Elementary with an "Animal Kingdom" theme. Mabel Rush will host "Under the Sea" July 25, followed by "Super Power" at Joan Austin Aug. 1 and "Space Quest" at Dundee Aug. 8. A four-day finale featuring a "Star Wars" adventure theme will then be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 13-16 at Newberg Christian Church, including a carnival on the final day.
