CCC to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and the Chehalem Cultural Center is embracing that celebration with events that stretch from September to early November.
The CCC will host a kickoff event for the celebration in an online setting from 6-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. At 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, it will host the "Folklore Fandanguero Group." At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, guitar masters Gerardo Calderon and Toshi Onizuka will perform in concert. Finally, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, the CCC will celebrate Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead).
"The Chehalem Cultural Center works to honor the vibrant Hispanic culture in Newberg, Oregon, all year long by offering inclusive, bilingual art and culture opportunities," a press release from the CCC said. "The CCC has been working with a local Hispanic committee with support from the Newberg Public Library to host a free Dia de Muertos celebration every year since 2010."
The initiative will once again be put on with the help of Instituto Cultura Oregoniana (ICO), a nonprofit that promotes and celebrates Hispanic culture in Oregon. The partnership has proven successful for the CCC in organizing the annual events.
"Prior to 2019, the CCC had been working with a volunteer planning committee to plan our annual Dia de los Muertos event, but we felt it was important to hire a person of Hispanic heritage to lead and broaden our programming and to ensure that it was culturally relevant and appropriate," Carissa Burkett, CCC director of arts programs, said. "When we put out the call for the contracted position, Matías Trejo DeDios, the executive director of ICO reached out and inquired if it might work for their organization to provide these services. By working with ICO, we now have access to the wisdom and resources of their whole network of people. Last year's programming was a great success and we are very happy to be working with them again this year."
The online event on Sept. 19 requires pre-registration at www.chehalemculturalcenter.org and the concert on Oct. 14 has a limit of 40 tickets for sale at $25 each. The other two events are free, do not require pre-registration and will be outdoors. For more information on the events, visit www.chehalemculturalcenter.org or go to the CCC's Facebook page for registration information.
