The annual Thanksgiving Day event will feature a handful of precautions in place

It's a Thanksgiving tradition unlike any other in Newberg, and this year, The Great Turkey Fumble will look slightly different than in years past, featuring changes intended to keep runners safe from COVID-19.PMG FILE PHOTO - The 2020 version of the annual Turkey Fumble event will primarily be an online affair.

The race, a 5K fun run and walk, typically occurs Thanksgiving morning, but this year's race will be held over the course of a month and will provide patrons a chance to track their progress. This year's event is the fifth in the Turkey Fumble's storied history, with proceeds benefiting Newberg FISH.

"We've created a month-long running challenge: Pick one of the distance options (10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles or 100 miles) and you have the entire month to run or walk those miles," organizer Brady Mordhorst said. "Feeling adventurous? Go for the 100-mile-in-one-month challenge, just a bit more than 3.1 miles a day. Or go for the 25-mile challenge, which equals out to one mile a day, with five rest days."

The new format will provide runners the opportunity to participate in the event without gathering in a large group, a common concern during the age of COVID-19. Mordhorst said the event will still raise money for a good cause and continue as a staple of the city's Thanksgiving traditions.

"All of this is inspired by 'streaking,' which is running in consecutive days," he said. "These challenges will push you, but you won't be alone. You'll be together with the Newberg community again as each day runners can log their miles and pictures in an effort of showing support."
