American Red Cross schedules a blood drive this week; dog costume contest slated; drive-through barbecue on tap

Blood drive set for Thursday in Newberg

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Nap's Thriftway, 112 E. First St. For more information, visit or call 1-800-733-2767.

It's time once again to dress your pooch

The Chehalem Park and Recreation District will hold its annual dog costume contest from 4 to 8 p.m. July 23 at the Dundee Friday Night Market, held weekly at Sander Estate Park.

Traditionally, the contest has been held in conjunction wtih the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival, but organizers trimmed the activities of that event due to the pandemic.

As part of the pooch competition, dogs will be photographed and their photos uploaded to the CPRD Facebook page, then online voting for the coolest costume will be open for a week.

"We will reveal the winner during our July 30 market," a release from the CPRD said, adding that prizes and treats will be provided by Pet Wants Beaverton and other sponsors and donors.

Kick off summer with a drive-through barbecue at Avamere

Avamere at Newberg Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, 730 E. Foothills Drive, will kick off summer July 22 with a free drive-through barbecue event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All businesses and residents are welcome to attend the event, which will feature grilled hamburgers or hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob and pie.
