SummerFest on tap for late August
There won't be an Oktoberfest in Newberg this fall, but organizers of the event have something else in store for festivalgoers in August.
"SummerFest" festival will take place in Memorial Park Aug. 27-28, bringing with it a number of unique attractions.
"Like the majority of the country, Newberg went into lockdown during the pandemic, cancelling all events like Old Fashioned Festival, Tunes on Tuesday and many others," a release from the organizers of SummerFest said.
"This town loves its festivals," a couple who frequented many of the city's events said in the release. "We look forward to going back to normal and opening up our beautiful community again."
That sentiment seems to resonate with the majority of Newberg.
The event is supported by the Newberg Early Bird Rotary, which started the Oktoberfest event eight years ago and decided to stage SummerFest instead this year. With the reduced number of summer events, organizers saw an opportunity to fill a void.
"With this change, we can bring much more to this new festival," Bob Travers, co-chairperson for the SummerFest committee, said in the release. "We have the opportunity to include more beers, different foods and local wine vendors. So far, Newberg SummerFest will feature four wineries and five food vendors, all from the region."
SummerFest activities will include the famous Weiner Dog Race that previously occurred at Oktoberfest; bounce houses and other games; live music from Hit Machine, Bobby T and the Lisa Mann Trio Band; a dance floor and market vendors from the area.
