Fettig wins state wrestling title

Cody Fettig of Newberg captured the 85-pound middle school state wrestling title, besting No. 1 seed Marcus Chan of Hillsboro 11-6 in the championship bout March 16 at Woodburn High School. The win avenged a 13-2 loss to Chan a week earlier.

Fettig was unseeded, but also bested the No. 2 seed in the quarterfinals. Oliver Myers, Ryan Montague, Diego Martinez and Taylen Reid also competed at the tournament for Newberg.

Pool offering variety of swim lessons

The Chehalem Aquatic Center will offer several types of swimming lessons with new sessions beginning next week.

Group swim lessons for children between the ages of 1 and 14-years-old are scheduled to begin next week and run Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday with morning, afternoon or evening sessions available. Registration is based on age and ability. Cost is $45.

The pool also offers lessons for home-schooled children that will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning April 1. Cost is $45.

Friday night swim lessons, ideal for busy families, feature one 45-minute lesson per week for five weeks beginning April 4. Cost is $46.

Finally, the pool is accepting new clients for private swim lessons, which run twice a week on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday format for either five or 10 lessons. Call 503-537-2909 to be placed on the appointment list. Cost is $80 for five lessons.

Newberg dance team takes fifth at state

The Newberg High School dance team placed fifth in the 6A small division at the 2014 OSAA Dance and Drill State Championship March 20 at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

The Tigers received a score of 71.31 points to finish just a head of sixth-place Tualatin (70.36), but well behind fourth-place Centennial (76.33). Sunset won the 6A small division state title with a score of 85.44.

Indoor kayak class offered by CPRD

The Chehalem Aquatic Center is offering a monthly two-hour indoor practice time for kayak owners, with the first session scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

All skill levels are welcome, but it is not an instructional session.

Participants should bring their own well-groomed kayak, paddle and safety gear. Cost is $9 per craft and registration is required.

Aqua Zumba on tap at the swimming pool

The Chehalem Aquatic Center is offering a sample Aqua Zumba class from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Friday.

No swimming skills are required for the low-impact pool exercise regimen with instructor Jennie Delp. Cost is $4.25. Aqua Zumba is also offered at 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

All water exercise punch cards will be honored for this class. Drop-in cost is $4.25.
