George Fox women roll to non-conference win
George Fox put a cap both on the 2017 calendar year and it's nonconference schedule with a 92-50 win over Vancouver Island Sunday at Miller Gymnasium.
The Bruins wasted little time in distancing themselves from the Canadian outfit, roaring to a 29-9 lead after one quarter.
Hailey Hartney powered George Fox to a 49-21 halftime lead by scoring 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first two quarters. The sophomore guard played just 18 minutes, as no Bruin starter played more than 21 in the blowout.
The Bruins shot 44.6 percent from the field, but did sink 11 3-pointers, with Hartney and Kylin Collman each sinking three shots from beyond the arc.
Collman, a sophomore guard, came off the bench to score 13 points and senior forward Kaitlin Jamieson also scored 10 points and blocked four shots in 20 minutes on the court.
Defensively, George Fox forced the Mariners (5-3) into 30 turnovers, including 18 steals, but did turn the ball over 17 times itself and went 15 for 22 from the free throw line.
The Bruins opened the second half on an 8-0 run and outscored the visitors in all four quarters, racking up 23 assists in the process and winning the rebounding battled 47-29. That rebounding advantage translated to a 38-18 edge in points in the paint for GFU, which also had 21 second-chance points.
George Fox (9-2, 2-0) will return to Northwest Conference play this weekend, beginning with a home contest versus Puget Sound (6-5, 1-1) at 6 p.m. Friday. The Bruins, who currently sit in a tie for first-place with No. 8-ranked Whitman (10-1, 2-0), will also host Pacific Lutheran (4-7, 0-2) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
