Newberg cruises past Sherwood to finish unbeaten; Massey eliminated in girls state qualifying tournament

The Newberg wrestling team capped off another unbeaten run, its third in a row, through the Three Rivers League with a 46-17 home win over Sherwood on Jan. 24.

The Tigers, who got wins from Boulder Friesen, Christopher Strange, Jack Evans, Ryan Frey, Taylen Reid, Rowan Gallardo, Kadyn Lauer, Hunter James, Branko Frketich and Tristan Osborn, are a big favorite to win their fourth straight district title Friday and Saturday at Tualatin.

Newberg's lone female wrestler, Hadley Massey, closed out her first season by going 1-2 at the state qualifiying tournament Saturday.

Massey (8-3) had previously won the 180-pound title at the Bob Beisell Girls Tourament on Jan 13.

Girls basketball

St. Paul 36, Central Linn 28 -- Erin Counts scored 14 points in a road win Friday night.

St. Paul 63, Regis 25 -- The No. 5 Bucks (17-4, 7-2 Tri-River) set a season high for points Monday night in Stayton.

West Linn 82, Newberg 57 -- The Tigers set a new high for points in the home loss Friday.

Sherwood 48, Newberg 23 -- The Tigers (4-14, 2-8) saw their losing skid run to seven games Saturday.

Boys basketball

St. Paul 76, Central Linn 53 -- The Bucks completed a season sweep of the Cobras Friday night.

Regis 70, St. Paul 54 -- The Bucks (13-8, 4-5) fell into a tie for fourth place with the Rams (14-8, 4-5) after the loss Monday night.

West Linn 73, Newberg 45 -- Alex Jaczko paced the Tigers (8-9, 2-5) with 16 points Friday night in the home loss in Newberg.
