George Fox University track athlete Matney Jamieson will lead the first camp from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. July 9-12 at Newberg High School. This camp will feature shotput/discus training for boys and girls in grades fifth through eighth. The participation fee for this camp is $89.

Jamieson first started coaching younger players earlier in the year. About twice a week she would work with a few middle school track athletes after she made connections with their parents through her head coach.

"The mother of one of my athletes was friends with Julie Peterson, who is the special services supervisor at CPRD," Jamieson said in an email interview. "She told Julie about how I was helping her daughter and that I was looking for a summer internship. Julie and I got in touch and she asked me if I'd like to put together this track camp.

"I grew up going to a lot of basketball camps during the summer, so I'm very used to that kind of atmosphere. These camps were where I learned all my skills and techniques as an athlete."

Jamieson said she is excited to share her knowledge of track and field with the Newberg community.

"Especially with field events that are very technique-based like the discus, it's important that kids start developing the right habits early on … as they get older and stronger they will have the foundation they need to become really successful," she said.
