Bruins Sports Day a chance to build community
George Fox University and Newberg are pretty tightly intertwined and for the school's sports teams, that translates into a lot of support on game days.
One of the biggest ways the athletic department likes show its appreciation is with Bruins Sports Day, when it offers a variety of youth sports clinics for children in grades 2-8.
"We get to welcome our community to campus and our student athletes get to engage with the young people through a shared love of sport," associate athletic director Elise Trask said. "This community is so supportive of our student athletes that this event is just a small way we can give back."
This year's event will be held Aug. 22 and area youth can register for clinics in one of eight different sports that will be led by GFU coaches and varsity athletes at locations across campus. Students can sign up for football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, cheerleading, softball, baseball and, for the first time this year, girls lacrosse.
This year's event will run from 12:30 to 3 p.m., with football and cheerleading hosted at Stoffer Family Stadium, soccer at the Austin Sports Complex, softball and baseball at the Morse Athletic Complex, volleyball at Wheeler Gymnasium and lacrosse at the outdoor tennis courts adjacent to the football stadium.
To register, visit the GFU athletic website at www.athletics.georgefox.edu and click "camps" from the "About" tab. Guidelines for what to bring and what to wear are also listed online. For more information, call 503-554-0283.
"The timing of this event is perfect too because it's right before our student athletes start school and before they start their competitive game schedules," Trask added. "It's a great reminder for them that their sport is just a small part of their experience here, a reminder of why they love what they do and a reminder of the positive impact that they can have on the lives of young people who look up to them."
