Individual runners from Newberg, Veritas and St. Paul schools all participate in state championships

The OSAA cross-country state championships took place at Lane Community College in Eugene on Saturday, and a trio of local runners made their mark.

Cam McChesney of Veritas and Broden Lear of St. Paul participated in the boys 5,000-meter 2A/1A race. McChesney finished fourth with a time of 16:36, while Lear finished 12th (17:27). The winner was Tim Stevens from Union (15:33), whose team took the boys title with 44 points.

Newberg's Abigail Hein represented the Tigers in the 6A girls 5,000-meter race, posting a time of 20:39 and finishing 91st. Summit High from Bend finished its undefeated season as the top team, posting a score of 39 and capturing a state championship en route to national competition.

Hein will be back on the trail for her senior year at Newberg next season, as will McChesney at Veritas. Lear will be a junior at St. Paul next fall when cross-country competition returns.
