Bruins sports round-up: Basketball teams diverge in December as both return to action from holiday breaks

PHOTO COURTESY OF GFU - The George Fox University men's basketball team are the losers of four straight games in December.

The month of December has not been kind to the George Fox University men's basketball team as the Bruins endured a four-game losing streak that has their record sitting at 4-5 on the season.

GFU lost 97-82 on the road Dec. 6 to Albertus Magnus before dropping a game on Dec. 7 at St. Joseph (Conn.) 88-56.

After that, they played an exhibition game at Concordia University in Portland, which the Bruins lost 87-68 but it didn't impact their record.

The team's two most recent games are a pair of home losses to Mary Washington on Dec. 19 and Wisconsin La Crosse on Dec. 21.

The Mary Washington game ended at 80-65 in the visitors' favor after GFU shot just 35 percent from the field and was out-rebounded 49-38. The Eagles took a 41-22 advantage into halftime before the Bruins won the second half by four, but it was all for naught in the lopsided loss for the Bruins.

GFU's loss to Wisconsin La Crosse was actually close for a good portion of the contest. The game was tied 39-39 at halftime before a second half run by the Eagles blew the game open.

GFU's shooting percentage plummeted in the second half and ended up at just below 33 percent on the night. WLCU's Ethan Anderson proved difficult to stop with a game-high 25 points as well.

Next up for GFU is a home game against Willamette on Friday to open up league play, followed by a trip to Linfield on Saturday.

Women on winning streak

The No. 9-ranked GFU women's basketball team is on a winning streak, rattling off six in a row after a season-opening loss. The Bruins were 6-1 before The Graphic went to press Friday afternoon and looked ahead to a pair of games over the most recent weekend.

GFU spent the weekend in Las Vegas for the D3hoops.com Classic Tournament, in which it played Scranton on Dec. 28 and University of New England on Dec. 29.

Prior to that, GFU's most recent game was a 70-55 win over Multnomah University on Dec. 3, a home game that marked the final contest for the Bruins before a long holiday layoff from competition.

The Bruins won that game on the strength of Emily Spencer's 21 points, overcoming a paltry 32 percent shooting percentage to best their opponents by 15 points. GFU had 20 assists and nine turnovers, while Multnomah had 20 turnovers and eight assists on the night.

Ahead for the women is the same slate as the men – a home game against Willamette on Friday followed by a road game at Linfield on Satruday.

Whitman is the next-highest ranked team nationally out of the Northwest Conference, coming in at No. 13 in the latest rankings.

GFU plays them for the first time on Jan. 18 in Newberg. Other notable home games include a Jan. 31 tilt with Linfield and Senior Night against Lewis & Clark on Feb. 21.
