NHS girls finish non-league slate of games strong
For the Newberg High School girls basketball team, non-league play provided an opportunity to rack up some wins. The Tigers finished non-league at 10-2 prior to a league-opening contest at Century (4-8) on Tuesday night, which was played after The Graphic went to press.
Newberg started the season 5-0 before its first loss, 72-53 on the road to Canby on Dec. 18. The Tigers then put together five wins in the final six games of their non-league schedule, with the only other loss so far a blowout to Tualatin at home, 58-28.
The Tigers won their home tournament with a pair of victories against Aloha and Sunset on Dec. 13 and 14, and they took home the title at the Century/Hillsboro tourney as well with wins against Reynolds, Aloha and Sandy on Dec. 26, 27 and 28.
Now, with their stellar non-league play behind them, the Tigers look to finish top three in a Pacific Conference that is anyone's game. Coach Luke Lindell said in the past that the race for the conference crown is open, and his team's goal is to secure an automatic bid to the Class 6A playoffs with a top-three finish in league.
After the Century game, Newberg hosts Forest Grove and Sherwood on Jan. 21 and 24. The Forest Grove game tips off at 5:45 p.m., while the Sherwood game will be at 7 p.m.
Boys making strides entering league play
Winners of four of their last five games, the Newberg High School boys basketball team arrives at the Pacific Conference portion of its schedule playing its best basketball of the season. The Tigers (6-6) beat Bend, Franklin and Summit before losing to David Douglas on Jan. 7, and their most recent game was a 61-40 win on the road at Roseburg on Jan. 10.
With the girls team out on the road, Newberg hosted Century's boys team on Tuesday night after press time. The Jaguars came into that contest at 5-7 on the season and losers of two straight games by double digits.
The next games for the fast-paced Tigers include a road matchup with Forest Grove (5-7) on Jan. 21 and a home game against Sherwood (6-6) on Jan. 24. After that, they will play a pair of road games against Glencoe (4-8) and McMinnville (2-9) on Jan. 28 and 31.
Newberg hosts the Liberty Falcons (6-6) on Feb. 4 at NHS.
