GFU women's basketball team keeps its win streak alive
Now the winners of six games in a row, the George Fox University women's basketball team is on a roll as the season reaches a crucial point. The No. 21 Bruins (17-4, 9-3 Northwest Conference) beat Pacific 59-54 on Feb. 4 before demolishing Pacific Lutheran on Friday, 59-25.
Both nights were of identical success for the Bruins in the scoring department, and it was the same players both nights that stepped up to lead the way. Seniors Emily Spencer and Emily Holder tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 apiece against Pacific, while Holder led the way with 13 against Pacific Lutheran.
A strong fourth quarter for GFU led to a much-needed victory over Pacific as the Bruins won the final frame 19-11. The win evened the season series at 1-1 between the two clubs after Pacific beat GFU 61-47 on Jan. 7.
Phenomenal defense won the day for GFU against Pacific Lutheran, with the Bruins holding the Lutes to 13.6 percent shooting and forcing them to commit 28 turnovers. GFU won the rebounding battle, too, 44-30.
Next up for the team is a pair of massive road contests against No. 7 Whitman on Friday and Whitworth on Saturday. Whitman leads the Northwest Conference with an 11-1 conference record while the Bruins are in second at 9-3.
Men drop two close ones
The GFU men's basketball team lost its two games last week, falling 99-96 to Pacific and 71-65 to Pacific Lutheran. The Bruins (8-13, 4-8 NWC) have lost seven of nine and continue descending the conference standings as their final stretch of games approaches.
The Bruins will also play on the road at Whitman and Whitworth on Friday and Saturday, with the Pirates coming into the contest receiving votes in the D3hoops Top 25 – essentially ranked No. 29 based on their number of votes.
