Newberg's best performance of the day comes from junior Ty Patterson, who placed sixth in the boys' 50-meter freestyle race

The Newberg High School swim team sent a small contingent of swimmers to the state championship meet over the weekend, showcasing some of its top talent in the pool. The Tigers didn't have enough points to receive a final ranking on the girls' side, but seven points from one swimmer was good enough for a tie for 19th place for the boys.

Junior Nikki Rubottom started things off for Newberg by competing in the girls 200 individual medley, finishing 18th out of 18 competitors with a time of 2:22.23. Senior Stella Byles followed that up with an 11th place finish in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 24.61 seconds.

Newberg's best performance of the day came from junior Ty Patterson, the team's only boy in attendance, who placed sixth in the boys' 50 free with a time of 21.84 seconds. This comes a year after Patterson and three of his teammates set a 6A record in the boys' 200 relay with a blistering time of 1:26.11.

Byles also competed in the girls' 100 free and finished 11th in 54.54 seconds. She joined Rubottom and junior teammates Natalie Kisling and Hailey Day on the girls' 200 relay team, with the Tigers finishing 12th in 1:43.97.
