Buckaroos hold Mustangs to 11 first-half points; face No. 2 Perrydale on Friday

The No. 2 St. Paul girls basketball team advanced to the state semifinals for the third consecutive year after defeating the No. 7 Mohawk Mustangs 58-41 Wednesday at Baker High School.

The Buckaroos (27-1) propeled themselves to victory with a smothering first-half defensive effort that held the Mustangs (23-5) to 11 points on 4-of-22 shooting.

While the Bucks didn't fare much better from the field, teammates Isabelle Wyss, Erin Counts and Mary Davidson worked the boards for second-chance points. The trio each pulled down four offensive rebounds, allowing St. Paul to take a 28-11 lead heading into the break.

The offense came alive in the second half. Counts was 6-of-7 from the field and scored 13 points in the final two quarters, helping the Bucks keep pace with Mustangs and maintain a double-digit lead throughout the contest.

Counts finished the game with a game-high 23 points on 11-of-18 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Wyss had 14 points and 16 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Davidson had 10 rebounds as well, helping to give the Bucks a 46-25 advanage on the glass.

Annabelle Davidson had nine points for the Bucks, and Diana Hernandez led the team with three assists.

Kennedy Mattox led the Mustangs with eight points, five rebounds.

St. Paul returns to the court Friday to face No. 3 Perrydale (25-4) for the opportunity to play in the 2020 1A Girls Basketball State Championship.

The Bucks are responsible for three of the Pirates' losses this season — 35-25 in St. Paul on Dec. 19; 33-15 in Perrydale on Jan. 28; and 44-18 in the league championship at George Fox University.

Tip-off is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. at Baker High School.
