NHS volleyball has winning week; soccer and cross-country in action
Entering the second week of a shortened season for all teams, the Newberg High School athletic program had a strong showing last week.
While NHS volleyball lost a road matchup with Sherwood in three sets on March 8, it followed that up with two key victories to even its overall record at 2-2. The Tigers returned home to beat Liberty 3-2 and handled Century 3-0 on the road.
Quick striking offense led to a 25-14 victory in the first set for Newberg against Liberty on March 9, but the Falcons responded by taking the second set 25-20. A dominant third set win at 25-10 gave Newberg the advantage yet again, but Liberty forced a fifth set by winning the fourth 25-21. A narrow 16-14 victory in the fifth set propelled the Tigers to victory.
The win over Century on March 11 didn't take long, with Newberg winning all three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-16. Next up for the Tigers was a trio of home games against McMinnville, held Monday, Forest Grove on Tuesday and Glencoe, slated for Thursday.
After having a game against Forest Grove canceled, the NHS boys soccer team split a week of games as it continued its shortened schedule of mostly league contests. Newberg beat Canby 2-0 on March 8, with goals scored by senior forward Isaac Williams and senior forward/mid Christian Morales.
The Tigers lost their second and final game of the week, falling to Glencoe 1-0 on March 11 thanks to a goal surrendered in the first half of play. Next up, Newberg travels to Sherwood on March 16 and hosts Liberty on March 18.
Newberg's girls soccer squad was in action on the same days as well, splitting its two road games against Canby and Glencoe while the boys played at home. The Tigers lost 3-1 at Canby with their lone goal coming from senior forward Ava White, and they won 1-0 at Glencoe on a goal in the 75th minute by senior midfielder Ella Diefenbaugh.
Next up for the girls is an inverse of the boys' schedule: a home game against Sherwood followed by a road game at Liberty.
In its first action of the season on March 6, the Newberg boys cross-country team beat Century 15-45 in a dual meet at NHS. The top six runners of the 4,000-meter race were all from Newberg, including a top three of sophomores Zachary and Anthony Giesch (9:48.61 and 9:52.83, respectively) followed by senior Jonathan Rolfe (10:16.32).
The Newberg girls picked up a closer win over Century in their dual cross-country meet, winning 23-32 and led by a top two of sophomore Acacia Czuk (13:11.75) and freshman Dominique Eszenyi (13:22.75). Sophomore Claire Faucher was the next highest finisher for the Tigers in fifth place (14:49.27).
Next up for both cross-country squads was a date with Forest Grove and Liberty at the Pacific three-way meet on Saturday at Forest Grove High School. After that, Newbeg participates in another three-way meet with McMinnville and Sherwood on Saturday at Sherwood High.
