Baseball wins two over Century; club teams pick up early victories in lacrosse

Newberg High School's spring sports teams continued the early stages of their seasons over the past week, picking up some impressive victories.

The Tigers' baseball team (3-2, 3-1 Pacific Conference) swept Century in a two-game series, winning 9-8 on April 19 and 17-5 on April 21. Newberg's softball team remains undefeated at 4-0 after a 7-0 win at Forest Grove on April 20 and an 11-1 win vs. Century on April 22. Next up for the Tigers is a home matchup with Glencoe on Friday.

The Newberg track and field teams are starting off their seasons strong, beginning with a dominant outing against rival McMinnville in the first meet of the year April 16. The Tigers' girls team finished with a team score of 90 compared to McMinnville's 47, and the boys won 104.5 to 40.5.

The trend of early season dominance against league opponents continued against Liberty on April 21. The Tigers won 88-43 on the girls' side and the boys won by an astonishing margin of 116-9. Next up for both teams will be a home meet against Sherwood on April 28.

Newberg's boys water polo squad is undefeated as well with two wins over Albany by margins of 24-9 and 23-5, a 24-9 win over Barlow and a 28-18 win at David Douglas. The boys look ahead to two games against Tigard and Lincoln on April 27 and 29.

The Newberg girls are undefeated in the pool as well with four wins over Albany (25-11 and 23-10), Barlow (24-14) and David Douglas (25-16). Their upcoming schedule is identical to the boys, as is their dominance so far.

On the lacrosse field, the Newberg boys are 0-3 after their first game of the year was canceled. Their losses include 15-6 to Oregon Episcopal, 9-8 to West Salem and 12-6 to Sherwood in the team's first conference game. Next up for the team is a game against Tigard on Friday.

For the Newberg girls lacrosse squad, it's been a more successful start to their 2021 campaign. The Tigers are 2-1 with wins over Westview (15-11) and Century (21-3) preceding a 17-7 loss to Lakeridge. Newberg's next game is against Tualatin on April 26.
