NHS roundup: Water polo squads remain undefeated
Just under three weeks into their season, the Newberg High School water polo teams once again are showing why they are among the state's elite. The Tigers' boys and girls squads are both undefeated, with none of their games ending up particularly close.
The boys (6-0) just finished a week where they beat Tigard 22-8 on the road, and they followed that up with a 21-9 home win over Lincoln. The girls (5-0) beat Lincoln 20-4 on Thursday, April 29.
Both water polo squads look ahead to their biggest games of the season against the state's other elite programs. The boys and girls both play Lakeridge on May 4 and Lake Oswego on May 6, both at home at the Chehalem Aquatic Center. After that, both teams play Forest Grove and Hillsboro to round out their schedules by mid-May.
Other Tiger teams in action
Another undefeated squad in the Chehalem Valley is Newberg's softball team, which sits at 6-0 overall and 5-0 in league play after another week-plus of defensive dominance. The Tigers beat Century 11-1 on April 22 and handled Glencoe 12-1 the next day; on April 28 they beat Sherwood 4-1.
Heading into a doubleheader against rival McMinnville on Saturday, May1, Newberg has outscored its opponents 44-3 this season. They haven't allowed more than one run in a game, a testament to their strong pitching and defensive prowess under coach Angela Stutzman.
After suffering a three-game losing skid, the Newberg baseball team got back on track with an 11-9 win over Oregon City on April 29. Before that, the Tigers (4-5, 3-3 Pacific Conference) had lost 12-1 to Sunset, 10-0 to Sherwood and 14-1 in their first of two games against the Bowmen.
Next up for the Tigers on the diamond is a two-game series against Glencoe, then the same against Forest Grove as conference play continues.
Newberg's track team faced its toughest test yet against Sherwood on April 28, with both squads failing to eclipse Sherwood's scores despite some impressive individual performances. The Tiger girls lost 93-47 in team points, while the boys lost by a slimmer margin at 82-63.
Newberg next hosts a "Friday Night Lights" on May 7 before a trip to Glencoe on May 12, with full individual results from previous events posted on the team's Athletic.net page.
