NHS roundup: Wrestling team completely dominating its competitors this season

With just a trio of games remaining on its schedule, the Newberg High School boys basketball team (8-3 overall, 8-2 Pacific Conference) has shown itself to be one of the top teams in the Pacific Conference. Were it not for a narrow loss to Sherwood on the road, the Tigers would be at the top of the standings.

Winners of four of their last five contests, Newberg is having a strong month of June. It began June 1 with a 81-76 win at rival McMinnville. On June 2, the Tigers beat Liberty 59-49.

Two days later, a 61-30 blowout win over Glencoe made it three victories in a row for Newberg, setting up a pivotal road clash with the Bowmen on June 8. The Tigers ultimately lost that game 47-46 in a thriller, following that up with a 75-60 home win over Forest Grove on June 9.

Newberg finishes off its season with a home game against Century on June 14, a road trip to Grant on June 16 and a Senior Night matchup against McMinnville on June 18.

Girls lose five of six games

It has been a challenging season for the NHS girls basketball squad, which enters its final two games of the season at 4-7 overall, 4-6 in the Pacific Conference. The Tigers have lost five of six games.

Following a loss to Ida B. Wells (formerly Wilson) on May 28, Newberg began the month of June with a 44-34 loss to McMinnville on June 2. After that, the Tigers lost to Liberty 54-40 on June 3 and beat Glencoe 48-43 on June 4.

The Tigers' two most recent games are a 38-21 loss to Sherwood on June 8 and a 56-31 drubbing by Forest Grove on June 9. After a weekend of graduation festivities for all NHS seniors, the team will wrap its season with a game at Century on June 15 and Senior Night against McMinnville on June 19.

Swim teams prep for conference meets

The NHS boys and girls swim teams wrapped up their shortened regular season schedules with meets against Liberty and McMinnville on June 3 and Century on June 8. Now, with the regular contests in the books, they look ahead to the Pacific Conference championships June 18-19 in McMinnville.

Wrestling continues dominating opponents

This season has been filled with dominance for the defending state champion NHS wrestling team. They've yet to lose a dual meet all year entering the conference championship season.

Newberg beat Sweet Home 66-6, Century 70-6, Crook County 56-10, Mountain View 57-3, Sherwood 76-3 and McMinnville 67-3. Now, the Tigers prepare for Pacific Conference championships at McMinnville on June 19.

Unlike some other sports, wrestling will have a chance to compete for a state championship this year. For the Tigers, that means defending a crown they've held since right before the pandemic hit in early 2020.

The 6A wrestling state championships will be hosted by Newberg High School and are set for June 25-26. Whether spectators will be allowed is unknown at this point, but more information on times and matchups is expected in the coming weeks.
