Newberg High sports round-up: volleyball, soccer, cross-country teams get seasons rolling

PMG PHOTO: GARY ALLEN - The Tigers beat Beaverton in two sets in a non-conference match Thursday at home.

As the air begins to cool and the winds start to rustle the leaves off their branches, the sounds of high school athletic competition are returning to Oregon. For the Newberg Tigers, the arrival of fall is a welcome one for the young athletes who either didn't participate in sports last season or only did so in a shortened manner.

For many, it will be the first of what has been a rare opportunity to socialize and make memories with friends after 18 months of dealing with the pandemic.

The NHS volleyball team -- with a roster comprised of five seniors and seven juniors -- brought its experience back to the court for a pair of matches to start its 2021 campaign. It was the first games played for the squad under new head coach Thomas Salness.

Newberg opened its season with a jamboree at Century High School on Aug. 26, but the first game to actually count toward the Tigers' record was played Aug. 31. Mountainside handled Newberg in four sets in what was a road contest for the Tigers.

Returning home Sept. 2, Newberg got in the win column with a two-set victory over Beaverton. Their first league contest is also at home and is against Glencoe, slated for Sept. 7 after The Graphic went to press.

Tournament play awaits Newberg on Sept. 11, followed by a home contest against Sherwood on Sept. 14.

Newberg's girls soccer team opened its season Sept. 1 with a 3-1 loss on the road to David Douglas. The girls face McNary at home on Sept. 7, then travel to Sandy Sept. 9.

While Newberg's boys soccer team kicked off it opener Friday on the road at Sprague. After that, the Tigers play at Central Catholic on Sept. 7.

The NHS cross-country team has its first official meet on Sept. 8 against Liberty, with the teams competing at Liberty High School. After that, Newberg will participate in the Meriwether Classic meet at Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro Sept. 17. A matchup with rival McMinnville awaits Sept. 22 at a neutral site in the Forest Grove area.
