NHS sports round-up: Volleyball, soccer squads to see action during an eventful week.

The Newberg High School cross-country team maintained its strong start to the season with a solid showing in a home meet Sept. 29. The teams from Glencoe and Century came to visit Newberg, and the Tigers had top finishers on both of their teams.

The boys were led by a trio that included twin juniors Zachary and Anthony Giesch, along with junior Zoltan Eszenyi. The Giesch twins crossed the finish line at the exact same time, posting a time of 17:17.40 to lead the pack. Eszenyi finished third in 17:31.40.

On the girls' side, Newberg senior Breanna Schmitt placed first in 20:50.80. Her next highest-finishing teammate was sophomore Dominique Eszenyi, who placed fourth with a time of 21:47.10.

Newberg's next meet is the Champoeg Invitational right up the road, scheduled for Oct. 8.

Newberg's volleyball team is asserting itself as one of the top squads in the state, sitting at 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific Conference. The Tigers were winners of 11 consecutive matches before a four-set loss to Glencoe on Sept. 30. Prior to that, Newberg beat Forest Grove in three sets and ran through the Westview tournament with four convincing wins on Sept. 25.

The Tigers look ahead to a road game at Sherwood on Oct. 6, with four additional matches remaining on their regular season schedule.

Newberg boys soccer is still waiting to get back on track, losers of two straight games. The Tigers (4-3) lost 2-0 to Mountainside and 7-0 to Grant, and they look ahead to a total of six conference contests before the postseason.

Newberg girls soccer is 2-4-2 on the season, most recently picking up a 1-0 win over Hillsboro on Sept. 28. The Tigers' first conference contest is Oct. 4 at home against Glencoe.
