Led by Benjamin Bizeau, Andrew Sandberg and others, Tigers boys claim district gold; girls take third.

It was a day of gold for the boys of Newberg High School's swim team. The Tigers claimed the top spot at the Pacific Conference swimming districts Saturday, Feb. 12, with a meet-high 446 points. Host McMinnville came in second place with 423 points.

Newberg's girls swim team took third place with a total of 278 points, trailing only McMinnville (415) and Forest Grove (323).

In both boys and girls events, Newberg will have representatives in 10 events at the 6A state competition.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Newberg's team of Byron Long, Andrew Sandberg, Christian DeMaster Smith and Ryan Jentges will be the 11 seed; in the boys 200-yard freestyle Benjamin Bizeau will be the 14 seed; Byron Long will compete in the boys 200-yard individual medley as the 17 seed; Ashley Cochran will be the 17 seed in the 50-yard freestyle race; Cochran also will be the 9 seed in the girls 100-yard butterfly.

More 6A state qualifiers will include: Andrew Sandberg as the 14 seed in the boys 100-yard freestyle; Benjamin Bizeau at the 10 seed in the boys 500-yard freestyle; the Newberg relay team as the 15 seed in the 200-yard freestyle relay; Andrew Sandberg as the 11 seed in the boys 100-yard breaststroke; and the boys 400-yard freestyle relay team in the 12 seed.

Here are highlights from the Pacific Conference swim meet.

Boys

Newberg's boys got things started strongly right out of the gate. In the 200-yard medley relay swimmers Byron Long, Andrew Sandberg, Christian DeMaster Smith and Ryan Jentges took 40 points with a time of 1:43.79.

Newberg senior Benjamin Bizeau took second place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.67, missing out on the top spot by .02 seconds. Forest Grove sophomore Aden McDonald barely edged him out. In the same event, Newberg freshman Hadley Holveck took fourth place with a time of 1:54.25.

Bizeau did, however, take first place in the boys 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:58.07. Not far behind him in third place was Jentges with a time of 5:05.75.

Sandberg took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.96 seconds to earn Newberg 20 points. He also took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.11.

In the 200-yard individual medley (IM), Byron Long took third place with a time of 2:07.85, and Ryan Jentges claimed fourth in 2:09.67.

In the boys 50-yard freestyle Newberg junior Mateo McKay took fifth place with a time of 24.10 seconds to earn 15 seconds.

In the 100-yard butterfly race DeMaster Smith took sixth with a mark of 57.68 seconds.

Newberg's McKay, Jentges, Holveck and Bizeau took third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.22, with Bizeau posting the fastest split with a 23.53 second time.

In the 100-yard backstroke Byron Long and DeMaster Smith took second and third place, respectively, with times of 57.75 and 57.87. Those times were less than a second behind McMinnville's Cal Kramer (57.61).

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Newberg took second place with a time of 3:27.55 thanks to the efforts of DeMaster Smith, Bizeau, Long, and Sandberg.

Girls

In the 200-yard medley relay Newberg claimed second place with a time of 1:58.95, just 0.02 seconds behind Forest Grove. The team consisted of Lily and Faith Bizeau, Ashley Cochran, and Ava Krober.

Lily Bizeau took second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:25.11. Bizeau also finished in seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:56.22.

Cochran claimed gold in the 100-yard butterfly race with a time of 59.11 seconds, and also took second place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.61 seconds.

Krober took fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.13.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Newberg's team claimed sixth place with a time of 1:59.70. The team consisted of freshman Callie Long, freshman Brooke Hauck-Hynen, senior Serayah Neiss, and freshman Avery Hauck-Hynen.

Faith Bizeau took third place in the in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.94.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Newberg's Lily Bizeau, Callie Long, Faith Bizeau, and Cochran took fourth place with a time of 4:05.82.
