Now that social distancing, face masks and furious hand-washing have become the norm, the idea of visiting a college campus virtually rather than in person may just seem like good sense.

Officials at George Fox University thought so and have joined an effort to bring that about in late July. The Newberg school announced recently that it would be among 10 schools to hold a series of "virtual visit sessions" July 27-31.

"We invite prospective students and their families to discover best-in-class private higher education during Oregon Private College Week," Brent Wilder, interim president of the Oregon Alliance of Independent Colleges and Universities, said in a release.

The three 80-minute events will cover admissions, financial aid and academic programs and are open to prospective students, their families, high school teachers and staff members, education program professionals, higher ed counselors and interested community members.

Registration for Oregon Private College Week is available at, which includes a virtual visit schedule, registration links, COVID-19 considerations and transfer student resources.

The alliance is composed of 15 private independent colleges and universities that together boast 30,000 students who typically finish their undergraduate degrees in four years, which the group claims is the highest rate of completion in the state.
