Newberg Chapter DX of the P.E.O. announced last week the recipient of its annual scholarship for a graduating senior at Newberg High School.
Isabelle Alloway is the lucky Tiger and will receive the $2,000 scholarship.
"We are delighted to award Isabelle with our funds, which have been raised by community members at our Fall Harvest Sale and No-Host Tea Party," chapter President Mardi Eggers said in a release.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a female NHS student with a minimum 2.75 grade-point average and plans to attend an accredited university or technical school.
The local chapter of the P.E.O. — otherwise known as the Philanthropic Educational Organization and one of the oldest women's organizations in the country — formed in 1967 and has been offering scholarships to NHS students since the 1960s; the original amount was $200.
The release demonstrated that the scholarship can make a difference by noting that a previous winner, 2018 NHS alum Madison McKellar, graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Linfield College.
"P.E.O. … has been celebrating women helping women reach for the stars for more than 150 years," the release said. "Since its inception in 1869, the nonprofit organization has helped more than 119,000 women pursue educational goals by providing over $398 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans."
