The Michigan native's last post was as a teacher and athletic director in McMinnville.

When students return to Newberg High School in a few weeks, they will be greeted by a new face: Ben Patterson.

Patterson was named last week to replace Andy DeBois as assistant principal at the school after DeBois was selected this summer to take over as principal at Chehalem Valley Middle School.COURTESY PHOTO: NEWBERG SCHOOL DISTRICT - When students return to Newberg High School in a few weeks they will be greeted by a new face: Ben Patterson.

Patterson's most recent post was as a teacher, athletic director and dean of students at McMinnville High School for the last 16 years. He also served as the school's volleyball coach and was involved in youth baseball and baseball programs in the McMinnville community. Before that the native of Detroit, Michigan, was an English and Spanish teacher in Missouri for nine years.

"We're excited to have Ben join our team at NHS," NHS principal Tami Erion said in a release. "Ben comes with extensive experience, including serving in a pseudo-administrative role as a dean of students for over a decade. We are confident that Ben will be a great addition to our NHS community."

Patterson is looking forward to his new post.

"I'm really excited to be at Newberg High School," he said in the release. "There are a lot of wonderful people in the schools and community. My wife is a graduate of NHS, so I have some history with Newberg and find it to be a great place. I'm looking forward to working with the students, families, administrators, teachers and staff at NHS."

Patterson, "a big fan of all Detroit sports teams," is also a car enthusiast. He and his wife Randie have two children: Elyse, a sophomore in college; and Luke, who will be a senior at NHS.
