November 10, 1954 to July 30, 2019 Michael (Mike) Kenneth Genzel was the kind of man one

USER SUBMITTED - Michael GenzelMichael (Mike) Kenneth Genzel was the kind of man one couldn't help but like. Sure, he was friendly and quick with a joke but there was something more profound about him that went deeper. He was kind, forgiving, accepting… a true friend. The kind of guy who would go out of his way to help you and never make you feel obligated.

People naturally liked him, children and young people especially. That is why the last 18 years that he spent driving a school bus for First Student were some of his most fulfilling. He had such an impact in this job that children and parents lined the streets of his route holding "welcome back" signs when he returned to work following an extended illness.

Mike was a committed Christian who knew and loved his Lord and Savior. On July 30, 2019 at the too young age of 64, he slipped his earthly bonds and went home to the Lord.

Born in Oregon City, Ore. on November 10, 1954, Mike was the fifth child of Chole Opal Gatlin and Kenneth (Slim) Genzel. He attended schools in Colton and Oregon City. Mike entered the Army- Airborne Division in 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1975. While in the Army, he was proud to earn his General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

Over the years, Mike worked as a warehouseman, janitor for Hoodview Church of God, ran a landscaping business and retired this year as a school bus driver. He was a member recently of Hoodview Church of God and previously of Canby Evangelical Church.

Mike was also active in sports both as a youth and throughout his life. He coached youth softball and enjoyed playing baseball, softball, basketball, football and golf. He had a life-long love of cars.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and older siblings, Russell Block and Martha Jane Huggins. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cheryl Allen Genzel, Canby , Ore.; his son, Jason Genzel; grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, and Zachary Genzel; great-grandchildren, Skylar O'Brien, Killian Genzel and Isaiah Eyman; sister, Mary Lou Castrey of Vancouver, Wash.; and brother, David William Block of Woodland, Wash. He is remembered with love by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Hoodview Church of God, 1530 Mt. Hood Ave, Woodburn, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hoodview Church of God Youth Program.
