SUBMITTED PHOTO - Elizabeth Ann (Betty) BodeElizabeth Ann (Betty) Bode died August 17 at age 72, surrounded by loving friends and family. She lived her life with compassion and love, motivated to help others, ready to laugh, always available to give advice or connect people, and full of energy to help her community, family and friends.

Betty was born in Mt. Clemons, Michigan, on January 19, 1947, to Jack and Eve Bode. She is survived by her siblings: Mary Bode Byrd (Jack), Jack Bode (Holly), Jim Bode (Judy), Tom Bode (Jacque); and Bill Bode (Barb). Betty is also survived by her nieces and nephews: Andrew, Adam, Katie, Alexis, Tom Jr., Adare, Michael, Doyle, Michael, Nick, and Rachel.

As a child, Betty found school difficult, but when she figured out the trick to education, she became - as she often was - unstoppable. She received her Bachelors of Science degree from Madonna College, Michigan, in 1974; a Master's of Science in nursing from the University of Portland in 1982; and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in education from Oregon State University in 1995.

Betty's first career was as a Professor at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon, where she taught for 25 years and was chair of the Medical Office Assisting Program. She loved the college and touched the lives of many students there.

In 2002, Betty retired from teaching and won election to the Beaverton City Council. There, she championed her lifelong causes of healthcare, education, human rights, and fighting homelessness. Her leadership and political skill won her reelection to the city council three times and she served on the council until the last year of her life. During this time she also served as clinic administrator at Virginia Garcia Memorial Clinic in Beaverton.

Betty was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Portland. Betty was a nurse, a teacher, a civic leader, and a friend. She will be remembered fondly and missed dearly by her constant and best friend, JoAnn Bavier, as well as her family, her church, her students, and more friends than can be counted.

Betty requested no flowers, but if you wish to honor her memory with a donation, please forward it to: Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation, PO Box 6149, Aloha, OR 97007.

A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday August 27, 2019 at 11 am with reception to follow. (Rosary at 10:30 am.) 3910 SE 11th Avenue, Portland, OR 97202.
