We have lost the crown jewel of our family. Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Helen Ruby Schmidt, peacefully passed away on July 26, 2019 Helen was born June 14, 1919, in Oregon City, Oregon. She was raised in Gresham by her mother, Rose Boese Shearer Sharnke, and the two shared an extraordinary relationship. In 1937, Helen graduated from Gresham High School. Soon after, she met Don Schmidt at Blue Lake Park. The two married in 1940 and celebrated 45 years of marriage before Don's passing. Helen was a devoted mother and nurseryman's wife. Her community schools and hospitals benefitted from Helen's time, energy and commitment as an active volunteer. Later, she was involved as a charter member of the Gresham Eagles, as well as, Women of the Elks and the Elks Widow's Club. Her family and many visitors to her home, enjoyed her gift of hospitality and indulged in Helen's hearty home cooked meals. She was also known as a talented floral arranger and planted a beautiful flower garden each year. This past June marked Helen's 100th birthday. Surrounded by family, she genuinely enjoyed celebrating her century with us. No one enjoyed a party more than our Grandma Nan. Helen leaves behind a legacy in her daughters, Donna Herbel (married to Ray) and Carolyn Meyer. She was preceded in death by her son, Jim Schmidt (married to Linda). She also leaves three generations of grandchildren: Jeanette Bristol, Colette Mick, Yvonne Gritten, Natalie Beal, John Harbour, Linsey Schmidt, Eric Schmidt, 14 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at 2:00 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, OR. Following a reception, there will be a Graveside Service at Douglass Pioneer Cemetery in Troutdale. Helen's family would like to thank the staff at O'Hara's Manor for their dedicated care over the past several years.
