SUBMITTED PHOTO - Donald ClelandDonald Cleland, a dedicated surgeon and family man, passed away on October 6th at the age of 87. Don was born and practiced in a clinic of cherished partners in Oregon City. He received a BS from Stanford University and attended OHSU where he completed his medical degree, Masters of Science, and surgical training that was informed by a 5th year of teaching anatomy.

Don was a person of absolute integrity, an amazing blend of business and medical acumen. In the service he directed the surgical side of the United States largest military hospital in Langstuhl, Germany; at home he juggled a busy surgical practice while managing pro bono the largest medical insurance program in the state (Physicians Association of Clackamas County), a non- profit organized by the physicians themselves and scrutinized by Alan Enthoven under Reagan as a potential national model. He cared for the Trail Blazer team, volunteered one day a week at the OHSU medical teaching clinic, and interviewed their candidates for surgical residency…near the close of his career he was honored as Professor Emeritus at OHSU.

He will be sorely missed by all of us in his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn; his children Kathy, Laurie, Don, and Mike; and his grandchildren Sara, Caroline, and Alex.

Services will be held on Oct.12th at 4:00 PM at St.Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 822 Washington St, Oregon City. His ashes will rest in the Columbarium there in the chapel where there is a stained glass window dedicated to his Grandfather. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Medical Teams International or the charity of your choice.
