August 21, 1934 - October 24, 2019Longtime Tigard resident Bernard Raymond Stanfill was born the second out of five children in Portland, Oregon, to Bernace and Beatrice Stanfill.

Longtime Tigard resident Bernard Raymond Stanfill was born the second out of five children in Portland, Oregon, to Bernace and Beatrice Stanfill. His family relocated to Scofield, Oregon, where his father raised turkeys and Christmas trees. He attended Banks High School, participating on the football and boxing teams, then Oregon State University for one year, returning home to take care of his parents after a serious car accident. He joined the Air Force in 1954 and served in weather stations in North Africa and Great Falls, Montana.

In March of 1957, Bernard proposed to Shirley Caldwell while home on leave. They were married on June 1, 1957, in Banks, Oregon, and were married for 62 years.

He returned to the Portland area following his military service and began working with his father as a plasterer and lather apprentice. Bernard's years in the construction industry included working as a building inspector for the City of Beaverton, building tree seedling coolers for the U.S. Forest Service, and serving as a building inspector for the city of Portland.

Bernie, also known affectionately as The Great Bernardo, was an avid reader, OSU football fan, crossword puzzle enthusiast (in ink), and philosopher of life. He was a member of Tigard Masonic Lodge, Al Kader Shrine, Portland Scottish Rite, Order of Eastern Star, and the American Legion. He served in several leadership roles and support positions and enjoyed talking the leg off of everyone. He died with his family at his side in the Tigard home he built in 1963.

In addition to his wife Shirley, he is survived by his children, Donna, Brian (Kathi), Susanne (Andrew) and Jonathan (Laura); his sister Nancy, his brothers Glen, Gary, and Roy; 10 grandchildren; and 2 greatgrandchildren. A son, Mark, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Young's Funeral home in Tigard, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland.
