Elisabeth Harney, who has been a part of the Newberg community for 44 years, passed away at age 80 on September 21, 2020.
Elisabeth was born March 23, 1940 in Zurich, Switzerland. She loved to hike in the flowery meadows above Grindelwald in the Swiss Alps. She was the first of five children born to Adolf and Maria Baltensperger. She exemplified resilience and courage to her siblings Margrit, Marianna, Ruth, and Adolf Jr. After she finished her secondary education, she worked for her father at his wholesale bicycle company, Kristal. She also lived in Paris and Scotland, and she worked for a travel agency in Yugoslavia on the island of Brach. Because of her bright mind and extensive travel, she spoke Swiss German, High German, French, English, Croatian, and basic Italian.
Elisabeth met her husband, Richard, while visiting her Aunt Millie in Los Angeles. After a whirlwind romance the couple married in Zurich, Switzerland on August 14, 1971. They trekked all through Europe on their month-long honeymoon. They would later repeat the trip with their two teenage daughters.
They began their life together in Los Angeles where their first daughter, Debby, was born in 1972. In 1977 Richard found a job at A-DEC in Newberg, Oregon and the family moved to their new home on Elliot Road. Three years later, Richard and Elisabeth adopted their second daughter, Ruth.
Elisabeth pursued her nursing degree and served at the Newberg Care Home for several years, and then worked as a nurse at Friendsview Retirement Community in the Health Center until she retired. She was known for her caring relationships with patients and her generosity.
She and her family attended West Chehalem Friends Church where she served on the missions committee, helping the church sponsor a Vietnamese family in the 1970s. In her later years she attended St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Newberg.
Elisabeth is survived by her husband Richard, her daughter Debby and husband David with their children Bree Becker (married to Jade Becker), Aren, Gwen, and Alandra Thomas; her daughter Ruth, husband Troy and their three children, Tyndal, Anika, and Malachi Longstroth; her four siblings; as well as by her cat, Sammy.
