Marcelline J. (Mitchell) MacDonald
A long-time Forest Grove resident, Marcelline was born in Montezuma, Iowa, to Marvin Paul Mitchell and Grace (Johnson) Mitchell. She grew up on her grandparent's Iowa farm until life moved her to Hillsboro, Oregon. She finished high school in 1945 and then worked as a laboratory ore analyst for Alcoa Aluminum Company in Hillsboro, saving money to attend the University of Portland School of Nursing. In 1950 she married fellow University of Portland graduate, Jerry MacDonald. Soon after, they moved to Billings, Montana where she worked in obstetrics at St. Vincent Hospital.
In 1965, the MacDonalds, which included 3 children, returned to Beaverton, Oregon. One of many things Marcelline accomplished was the development of the Health Careers program for Beaverton School District. She was immensely proud of the many doctors, nurses, therapists, morticians and veterinarians who started their health careers in that program.
Several years after husband Jerry died, Marcelline took up life's travels with Joe Overman, a fellow RVer. She is survived by Joe; daughter, Gayle MacDonald, Portland, Oregon; two sons and their spouses, Jim and Kari Jane MacDonald, Beaverton, Oregon and Greg MacDonald and Donna Hughes, King City, Oregon; and brother Gordon Gauss of Tempe, Arizona. Also surviving are three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews.
Remembrances may be given to the University of Portland Endowment Fund, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97203 or to the American Heart Association, Oregon Chapter, 4380 S. Macadam Avenue, #480, Portland, Oregon 97239.
