In 1985, Patty traveled throughout Asia studying Eastern religions and philosophy through the International Schools program. She completed her doctorate in East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco in 1988.

For ten years, Patty presented workshops focusing on midlife issues for women and was an adjunct teacher at PSU. Her most professionally gratifying years were 1989-1996, teaching seminars and classes in the Social Science, Communications and Interdisciplinary Studies departments at Marylhurst University. She published articles and a book for midlife women, Mythmaking:Heal Your Past, Claim Your Future. Following retirement, she spent time writing, genealogy research, hiking, bicycling, gardening, and volunteering in the SMART reading program. In 2013, she and her husband Richard moved to West Linn where Patty joined a writing group at the Adult Community Center and actively visited West Linn Parks.

Above all, Patty was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. Dick passed in 2014. Patty is survived by her children, Patrick, Andrew (Donna), Dede (Russell Axelrod), Michael (Jeanne), and Rick; six grandchildren, Erin, Emily, Lauren, Cecily, Bo and Lucas; sisters, Marjorie Columbus (Costa), Audrey Waldorf (John), and Miriam Selby (Robert); and many nieces and nephews.
